A pub in Wimbledon town centre may be facing demolition to make way for a seven-storey hotel that is set to provide just four bicycle parking spaces for guests.

A planning application has been submitted to knock down The Slug @ Wimbledon pub, in Hartfield Road, and to build in its place a 150-room hotel with a ground-floor restaurant. The application includes no car parking.

Hermes Investment Management, who submitted the proposals, said it was too early to comment on specifics relating to the plans.

Manager at The Slug, Raul Ruiz, said the pub was hoping to challenge the plans.

He said: “This is the first I have heard about it. Maybe the old general manager had more information, but nothing was passed on to me. I would be upset, of course. Customers will be upset. We want to keep the pub where it is.”

The plans submitted to Merton Council propose eight long-stay bicycle parking spaces for employees, and four for guest bicycles.

The company that would be running the new hotel has not been named, but is described in the plans as “a well-known hotel operator”.

A spokesman for Hermes Investment Management said: “These proposals are for a new hotel and they will be considered by the council in due course.

"However, at this point in time it is too early to comment on potential hotel occupiers.”

They declined to comment on parking spaces in the plans, or the possible impact of Crossrail 2.

An application has already been submitted to turn the nearby former Henry J Beans bar and job centre, on the Broadway, into a 176-bedroom Premier Inn. There are no plans to provide car parking spaces on this site.

Meanwhile, Merton Council voted on June 2 to allow the town centre’s Broadway car park to be sold to developers. It is believed the space will be used for retail or office space.

A spokesperson for Merton Council said: “Planning officers and committee members always consider issues such as how the development fits in with the character of the area, as well as any parking implications arising from the proposals.

"Where applications are granted, the council will seek to minimise any disruption from construction through the use of conditions controlling hours of work and a construction management plan which deals with issues such as dust, parking and deliveries.”
