A block of flats will nearly triple in size after permission was granted for a three and four storey development to be built in Wimbledon town centre.

There will be no affordable housing in the new block in Griffiths Road, Wimbledon, which is currently boarded up.

Merton Council's planning committee granted permission to demolish the nine flat apartment block and replace it with a 23 flat complex in Wimbledon town centre despite opposition.

The proposed site, on the corner of Griffiths Road and Montague Road, Wimbledon, currently comprises a vacant three-storey block of nine flats, as well as a second block of three garages.

However, GM London Limited has secured permission to knock down the existing structure, and replace it with 23 residential flats in a part three and part four storey building.

Of the 23 flats, 14 will be two-bed, five will be one-bed and four will be three-bed full sized family homes. There are no plans for any of the flats to be affordable housing.

The proposals also include 11 car parking spaces, 41 bicycle spaces and 228 square metres of gardens and balconies.

Griffiths Road may be subject to even more building work soon, as recently unveiled plans to build a Premier Inn on the former Henry J Beans bar and job centre in Wimbledon Broadway also included the building of two family homes on the road.
