A man who was arrested on a drugs charge after men spotted with toy guns caused a huge armed police operation in Wimbledon, has been fined and received a caution.

Armed police were called to Wimbledon station at 9am on Tuesday, August 16, after a member of the public saw a man “acting strangely” and “in possession of an item believed to be a firearm” on a train from Clapham Junction.

Police swarmed on Lower Downs Road at 9.30am, before moving into Dennis Park Crescent. Witnesses said several heavily armed police officers were warning residents to stay indoors and members of the public to stay back.

Kingsley Eson, 29, of Dennis Park Crescent, Wimbledon Chase, was arrested shortly after 10.45am, on suspicion of possession of a firearm and possession of a class B drug.

Eson was later told that no further action would be taken against him for possession of the firearm, but was charged with possession of cannabis. He pleaded guilty at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, September 1, where he was fined £80 and ordered to pay costs of £115.

A 31-year-old man was arrested in Kingston on suspicion of possession of a firearm later in the evening of August 16. When he was arrested, police discovered two toy guns. He was bailed until September 13, but has since been told that no further action will be taken against him.

A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police said: “Should any new information come to light in relation to the firearms incident, this will be assssed.”
