I am writing in response to your article ‘Scheme to relocate fire stations branded 'economic madness' (June 14).
The Fire Authority successfully lobbied the government for £57m capital funding for nine new London fire stations so that the London Fire Brigade has the fire facilities to remain a world-class service.
Therefore it would be “madness”, and very much not in Londoners’ interests, to hand this money back.
In Mitcham we need to relocate the fire station because the current premises are part of ageing estate facilities that are simply not fit for purpose any longer.
The proposed new premises will be larger, allowing for more modern fire appliances as well as extensive training and community facilities.
These benefits will save the fire service - and hence the taxpayer - money in the long term.
