I have no doubt that the headline Unsafe Town (Mitcham and Morden Guardian, August 7) will provoke a plethora of complaints from local councillors who will quote reams of data to illustrate exactly how safe Mitcham town centre really is.
However, last Saturday, 250 members of the public stood up to say that their perception of safety is at odds with these statistics ( lies, damned lies and statistics).
Until Merton Council can generate a feeling of safety from residents, the £6.2 million regeneration of Mitcham town centre should be put on hold.
