It was fantastic to be part of a flashmob event in Sutton on the weekend. Led by the voices of the NHS Choir, a group of campaigners committed to saving vital services at St Helier Hospital made their way through the Sutton high street, along with a fire engine in support, playing appropriate songs such as "Sledgehammer" and "Can't Touch This".
I was proud to be riding on top of the fire engine as it negotiated the one-way system and what was especially pleasing was the level of public support for preserving St Helier's A&E, maternity, renal and children's services. As we travelled around Sutton, we were heartened to receive so many smiles, waves, thumbs-ups and honks. It is clear that local people want to preserve this important local hospital.
As we look forward to the public meeting tonight (Thursday, March 13) at Merton Civic Centre, it is important for everyone to realise the battle to save St Helier Hospital is far from over - but we are delighted that so many people are proud to publicly show their support.
