Croydon FC chairman Dickson Gill believes new manager Tony Beckenham is the man to finally bring stability to the club after a season of upheaval.

The former Holmesdale boss becomes the Trams fourth manager since August after Dave Leworthy was forced to step down because of work commitments, and Gill, who began the season as boss before handing the reigns to Mark Tompkins, admitted that getting a settled side was now more important than league position this season.

“I want stability and a bit of loyalty which Tony showed at his previous club,” he said.

“I said to him hopefully he doesn’t have to change too many players as we have had a terrible time so far this season and it would be nice to keep them together.

“If we win half of our games in hand we will be pushing mid-table and I think we can finish top half but I have told the manager not to worry about it, he has got the summer to get it right.

“We have had three years in this league so he is not expected to come in one year and do it, it takes time to repair things.”

Gill also thanked Leworthy for his time at the club, in which he took control of the side for just nine games, winning four and losing four.

““He is one of the best managers I have had since I have been chairman and I thank him for all his time and effort,” he said.

“The club was buzzing with him and he is a popular figure and helped me so much when I was in hospital for which I am so thankful.”

The Trams played out a dull goalless draw against Herne Bay on Saturday in the first leg of the Kent League Premier Division Cup quarter-final.

Croydon FC’s next three matches: Jan 31 Herne Bay (cup 2nd leg, a), Feb 7 Deal Town (h), 14 Hythe Town (a).
