England cricket hero Alec Stewart has labelled Cornithan Casuals's FA Trophy heroics on Monday as one of the club's best efforts.

Boss James Bracken's men beat Grays Athletic 1-0 at King George's Field to reach the FA Trophy first round for the first time in their history.

Juevan Spencer was the hero for Casuals as he rose to head home Dave Hodges' cross in the 93rd minute to land £4,000 in prize money to go with the £8,450 already collected from the cup run thus far.

New Malden-raised Stewart, who scored 8,463 Test runs for England, has turned out in the famous chocolate and pink colours in the past.

And the 52-year-old, who led Surrey to the LV= County Championship Division Two title in the summer as director of cricket, was delighted to see the club progress to a home clash with Southern League Premier Division side Hungerford Town.

"Brilliant effort. Surely one of the best wins in recent history for this great club," he tweeted.

"Great club and a great result. Well played."
