Sutton United boss Paul Doswell reckons Ks striker Bobby Traynor’s play-off semi-final winning show could force a re-think on his plans for next season.

The 26-year-old struck a wonder volley from Luke Hickie’s cross to give his side a 3-2 lead on Tuesday night and then followed it up with a jinking solo effort to secure a thrilling 4-2 victory.

Sutton had led 2-1 at the break through Bradley Woods-Garness and Steve Perkins, but Ks defender Adam Thompson slammed home an equaliser just after the break before Traynor’s touch of class set-up Saturday’s play-off final trip to Boreham Wood.

Doswell, whose side finished second in the table behind runaway champions Dartford, has said he is happy he has built a side capable of winning the Ryman League Premier Division title - and automatic promotion - next season.

But the form of 35-goal Traynor left him drooling, forcing him to concede a player of his type could still be the difference between success and failure next season.

“Our chance to win the game was in the half hour spell before the break where we should have gone in three or four-one up,” he said.

“We didn’t look to change things at half-time, but most of my team didn’t turn up in the second-half and we had two Premiership standard strikes against us.

“Adam showed great technique to keep his volley down and then Bobby scores one of the best goals I’ve ever seen in a game of this type at this level, before doing what he does best and adding a brilliant fourth.

“Maybe I’ve got to look at that for next year. In Bobby, they’ve got someone who has scored 30-odd goals this season and in a big game he has come to the fore.

“He is just different class. He is a goal poacher and works very hard for his team. I thought he was excellent.”

Sutton lost out in the play-offs for the second successive season under Doswell, but the Gander Green Lane maintains he still has nothing but praise for his men.

“I’m devastated. At the end of the day, over 42 games we are the second best team in the league but in a one-off game we weren’t good enough,” he added.

“It hurts. There is nothing else to say. I’m very, very disappointed.

“My team has done themselves proud this season, but you have to say that when it really mattered we didn’t perform as well as we should have done.

“I can’t begin to describe the disappointment. We’ve missed a massive opportunity and that is the biggest disappointment of it all.

“The lads will never get a better chance to go up than they had tonight.”
