The Vanarama Conference South season is not yet four weeks old, but boss Paul Doswell is already wielding the axe and reshuffling the pack.
Prior to last weekend’s 4-2 win at St Albans City, featuring a third goal of the season from Jessy Reindorf and goals from Charlie Clough and Jamie Taylor, United had made a stuttering start bagging only four points from four games.
Last week Doswell pointed the finger, and now he has acted.
The biggest name to leave Gander Green Lane is head coach Peter Beadle, who was only brought in as a replacement for Steve McKimm in the summer.
Dammy Shitta and Claudiu Hoban have been released, while Lee Sawyer has joined Chelmsford City on a three-month loan, with the option of a permanent move, and Louis John has joined Lewes for a month.
Coming through the Lane gates is Glen Southam.
The 34-year-old midfielder and captain at Chelmsford City has made more than 400 first team appearances at clubs including Eastleigh, Bishop’s Stortford and Dagenham & Redbridge, for who he won promotion to the Football League in 2007.
Doswell said: “It was an amicable split with Peter [Beadle]. The relationship just was not working, he is used to being a number one.
“There is no point carrying on when you know it is not working.
“I’ve been lucky to work with Paul Telfer and Steve McKimm for about six years, and Alan Payne for two, so for me to split from a head coach so soon is unusual.
“For the time being, myself, Matt Lockwood and Jamie Lawrence will take training, and if that doesn’t work, we’ll look at the alternatives.”
He added: “Against St Albans City we were back to how we should be playing, with a high pressing game.
Back and flying: Dale Binns made his first start of the season in the 4-2 win at St Albans City on Saturday
“Having Dale Binns and Callum Hart back from injury was massively important for us, but there is still work to be done.”
Another name on the comeback trail is Will Spetch, and he has joined McKimm at Tonbridge Angels for a month to continue his rehabilitation.
Doswell said: “Will has been so unlucky with injury, he would be my first name on the teamsheet as I rate him so highly.
“I trust Steve [McKimm] implicitly and hopefully Will will return fully fit.”
