Tooting & Mitcham United’s new management team will not be ruling with an iron rod, but discipline is high on their agenda for success.

Boss Frank Wilson and assistant coach Mark Hams took over from Craig Tanner and Adam Moriarty at the end of last season.

Now Wilson has laid down his management ethos, and also revealed the new names he hopes will fire the Terrors up the non-League pyramid.

And the former Tooting reserves boss is not daunted by the revolving door on the manager’s office that has seen four managers come and go in the three seasons prior to Wilson’s arrival.

He said: “It’s difficult to understand why there has been a high turnover – obviously results are important - especially when you’re dealing with a club of Tooting’s stature.

Tooting & Mitcham United boss puts his stamp on proceedings

“I cannot comment on predecessors, but from what Mark and I have seen from meeting the chairman and the staff and getting to know the club, it’s a fantastic place.”

He added: “But discipline is an area that was not properly addressed before and I think it can sometimes come from when managers of a certain age rely on relationships with players.

“I know Craig only stopped playing a couple of years ago and he relied on players he had played with in terms of attracting them to the club – may be some of them lacked discipline because of that.

“If you give some of these players an inch they will take a mile.

“That’s where Mark comes in as first team coach – if you’ve met him, you know what he is about as a coach.

“We have the perfect combination in our strategy – professionalism, man management and team structure as well as Mark’s disciplinary approach.

“It’s important to enforce the club’s ethos from the start because successful teams are not built on mates playing together – it’s important to have that, but it’s also important to remember you are aspiring for something better.”

Wilson’s ambition has always lain in coaching and he has spent six years working at Fulham before joining as Terrors’ reserve coach two years ago.

And while this may be his first foray in to first team management, he remains confident of success.

“I am not nervous, I am confident in my own abilities. With my partnership with Mark and the support of the staff at the club, I know this job is going to be a successful one.

“It might be my first experience but what a fantastic club to be starting off at.”
