Brentford head coach Marinus Dijkhuizen will be given time to find the right formula for a tilt at Championship promotion.

The 43-year-old’s predecessor Mark Warburton took the Bees to the play-offs, raising expectations his Dutch successor can at least match the achievement.

Warburton lost his first game in caretaker charge of the club – 3-2 at Carlisle United in the FA Cup – but bounced back to win his first six league games after his permanent appointment.

Dijkhuizen will come under pressure from the fans should results go against him, but he will retain the the board’s backing.

And the former Excelsior chief is confident he will at Griffin Park for some time – even if the Bees do not get off to the best of starts next term.

“The story I got from Rasmus [Ankersen] Matthew [Benham] and Phil [Giles] was very bright,” he said.

“There is not a policy when you lose some games you get under pressure.

“They look at how you improve the team and train the team. And they discuss a lot about that.

“I think there is no problem if we lost some games at the beginning of the season.

“I did not have to come here. I was happy at Excelsior I still had two years on my contract. It was not as if I had to move on.

“There is a good vision here. If you look at the football clubs around us in England and the Netherlands, there are some clubs that if they lose some games they sack the manager.

“I do not get the feeling that is something Brentford will do.”
