Corinthian Casuals have come to the rescue of Premier League West Ham United to save a European youth tournament from the axe, writes Stuart Amos.
The Hammers’ Upton Park home had been due to host a festival of international football on Sunday.
But their confirmed participation in the Europa League has forced off-season pitch renovation work to be brought forward, leading to the cancellation of the West Ham Tournament.
Casuals’ U13 team were one of more than 40 teams due to appear at the Boleyn, but have now offered to host the event at the 11th hour for teams in their age group from France, Jersey and across the UK.
Casuals’ U13 team boss Peter Doherty said: “It’s not the greatest venue in the world, but our history rivals many professional teams.
“I’m just glad we can offer at least a small consolation to some of the teams and, hopefully, they will enjoy the day and leave with happy memories of visiting our club.”
The tournament kicks off at 10am on Sunday.
