AFC Wimbledon boss Terry Brown's fate will be sealed in the Kingsmeadow boardroom this morning the Wimbledon Guardian has learned.

The club's board of directors will meet at 10:30am to discuss the manager's future with an announcement expected later today.

Brown is thought to have offered his resignation last night having bid what appeared to be an emotional farewell to fans after Tuesday's 1-0 League Two defeat to Torquay United.

The former Aldershot Town chief, who secured promotion to the Football League for the Dons in 2011, did a lap of the Kingsmeadow pitch  at the final whistle waving to supporters on all four sides of the ground.

Insiders have confirmed it is unlikely Brown will be the manager by the end of the day, although it remains unclear whether the 60-year-old walked or was pushed.

Assistant boss Stuart Cash revealed Brown was too emotional to address the media after last night's game with the manager said to be distraught at the final whistle of a match that hinged on a freak first half goal from United's Rene Howe.

On-loan Dons midfielder Steven Gregory, who returned to the club last week, described the whole squad and backroom staff as emotional and despondent.

The 25-year-old spent two seasons at Kingsmeadow before switching to AFC Bournemouth last summer having helped the Dons into the Football League.

And he paid tribute to the manager who became a father figure to him.

"It is hard because I wanted to come here and win games. Wimbledon is close to my heart from being here before – I came here to win games and it is not working out. It is all very emotional at the moment," he said.

"Terry is phenomenal, he’s like a father figure to me. My own father passed away when I was here previously and he was amazing through it. He is a massive part of why I wanted to come back and help them out."

Former Brentford boss Andy Scott, who secured the League Two title with the Bees in 2009, was at the game on Tuesday night as a guest of Torquay United boss Martin Ling and is among the favourites to take over.

He said: “It would be disrespectful to talk about Terry’s position until anything has been confirmed, but I am out of work and would be interested in any job that became available in League One or Two. I dearly want to get back into the game.”

Out-of-work Dons legend Lawrie Sanchez, sacked by Barnet in April, would also be a popular choice.

An announcement over Brown's future is expected this afternoon with the Dons - who have not won a league game since the opening day triumph over Chesterfield - sitting 21st in the League Two table on the back of four straight defeats
