Twickenham's Mo Farah produced a performance of a lifetime in Barcelona on Tuesday night as he became the first British winner of a 10,000m at a European Championships.

Farah’s tactical performance was nothing short of perfect in Spain, as he outsprinted Spaniard Avad Lamdassem on the last lap to win, having initially made a break seven laps out, to take gold in 28 minutes, 24.99 seconds.

Four years ago Farah was disappointed after being beaten to silver in the 5,000m at the Gothenburg European Championships.

But, after storming to a comprehensive gold medal in Barcelona, Farah admitted his performance in Spain more than made up for that upset.

Fellow Brit Chris Thompson took the silver medal after a gutsy battle down the back-straight but it was all about Farah's gold in Barcelona.

"I can't describe how this feels. It's been so much hard work and I've spent so much time away from my family and this is for them," said Farah.

"We were ranked one and two in Europe and the pressure was on and it was an amazing performance by both of us.

"Four years ago, I missed gold in the 5,000m by less than half-a-second and it was hard to take it for quite a long time. So it means so much to finally win that gold medal.

"I've had some tough times but I kept training and focused.”

Farah won’t have long to bask in his glory with a return to the track in the 5,000m scheduled for tomorrow (Thursday), when he will bid to improve on the silver he won in the same event in 2006.

“It's not over yet. We've both got to get into the ice bath now and start preparing for the 5,000m," added Farah.

"This just means so much to both of us and hopefully we can build on that.

"Each year, I feel I have been thinking about the Europeans and the disappointment of last time so to get the gold – I just can’t believe it.

"I have made a lot of sacrifices and it means a lot to me to win the gold.

"I’m really happy – I’m chuffed with the race and I’m really happy for Chris as well because we go way back. I hope we have made GB proud.”
