Twickenham's Golding falls short of SW19 best

Wimbledon Guardian: Off form: Twickenham's Oliver Golding Off form: Twickenham's Oliver Golding

Twickenham’s Oliver Golding let a one-set lead slip against Swiss opponent Marco Chiudinelli as his dream of claiming wildcard entry for next week’s Wimbledon Championships ended at Roehampton this week.

The 20-year-old won the first set 6-4, before going on to lose the second and third sets by the same scoreline to crash out in qualifying.

Golding felt he had his chances to progress against his Swiss opponent, but at the key moments was unable to find a winning shot.

And now it is back to the drawing board for the former Newlands House pupil, who admitted his game had suffered an unexplained dip in form in recent weeks. “I’d been struggling with my game the last couple of weeks so I wasn’t perhaps in the best form coming in to the qualifiers,” he added.

“I had a good start to the year, but it’s fizzled out a little bit.

“It’s been a good experience to play in these qualifiers. I’ve shown I can play at this level and it’s about reproducing that week in week out.

“I’ve played some good tennis and I’ve just got to keep working hard and hopefully the results will come.”

He added: “I had break points to go a set and a break up, but I didn’t go for it enough.

“I think I played within myself and that cost me dearly in the end.

“Overall, I’ve played worse matches, but I think if I’d played my best tennis I would’ve got through that but I just couldn’t bring it to the court.

“I had my chances and I’m disappointed I couldn’t take them.”
