A 19-year-old man has been attacked with a sword in Cheam on New Year's Day.

The man was found collapsed by an off-duty police officer in Belmont Rise at the junction with Hillside Road..

Police say he was suffering from sword injuries to his head, face and neck.

The victim, who has not been identified, was making his way to a friend's house after attending a New Year's Eve party when he was attacked at around 6am.

He had travelled to Cheam on the N93 nightbus with a friend and got off at Church Hill Road where the pair parted company.

He then walked to the end of Church Hill Road close to the BP petrol station before continuing on to Belmont Rise where he crossed over the railway bridge before being attacked.

The victim's wallet and mobile phone were found nearby.

Sutton police want to speak to anyone who saw the victim from the time he got off the bus.

Officers are also looking for witnesses who saw a small red car parked in a lay-by. Two white men in their early 20s were seen getting into the car and heading south along the A217 towards the M25.

Detective Sergeant John McQuade, said: "This is an extremely violent, unprovoked attack and we want the public to come forward to help us catch those responsible."

Police say the victim's injuries are "life changing" but not life threatening.
