Police have made a second arrest in connection with the fatal stabbing of 21-year-old Selsdon roofer Billy Ward, who died after a fight on a Croydon night bus.

Mr Ward, 21, was found at the junction of Gravel Hill and Selsdon Park Road about 3.40am yesterday morning suffering multiple stab wounds.

He was taken by ambulance to Mayday Hospital but was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

Police said two men, one aged in his late teens and the other in his early 20s, were being questioned.

Detective Chief Inspector Damian Allain said police were treating the death as murder and appealing for anyone who travelled on the N159 night bus from Croydon to come forward.

DCI Allain, from the Homicide and Serious Crime Directorate, said detectives were looking for two black teens involved in an altercation with the dead man on the bus.

He said the pair were described as being in their late teens and were last seen running off down Selsdon Park Road.

Police have informed the man's next of kin but are awaiting formal identification and a postmortem examination.

DCI Allain said Mr Ward was coming home from a night out in Croydon when there was an altercation on the bus.

He said the bus driver stopped near the Gravel Hill-Selsdon Park Road roundabout and the three got off.

Police believe Mr Ward could have been stabbed either on the bus or when the fight continued at the bus stop.

Anyone with information about the stabbing or who was travelling on the night bus should phone the incident room on 020 8721 4805.
