A 21-year-old man has been found shot dead in a stairwell in Stockwell.

Police found the man in Jephson Court of Studley Road about 11.50pm last night after responding to reports of shots being fired.

The murdered man was found in a communal stairway on the third floor of the block suffering gunshot wounds.

Ambulance officers pronounced him dead at the scene.

Operation Trident detectives said in a statement that they know the identity of the man, who is believed to be from South London, but were awaiting formal identification.

A post mortem examination is expected in coming days.

Another man, 19, was found nearby suffering serious injuries from broken glass.

The injured man was rushed to a south London hospital where he remains.

A police spokeswoman said the man's injuries had been inflicted after the shooting and were not considered suspicious.

The scene has been cordoned off while forensic officers examine the area and an incident room been under Trident's Detective Chief Inspector Adnan Qureshi, who said police were keeping an open mind about the motive behind the murder.
