A cyclist has been airlifted to hospital after being hit by a lorry in East Sheen.

The London Ambulance Service said the woman, believed to be 21, was treated at the scene for an abdomen injury following the accident at 12.42pm.

She was taken to the Royal London Hospital by air ambulance.

Eyewitness Charles Standing, who lives in Upper Richmond Road West, said: "The cyclist was travelling on the left of the truck.

"The truck went to turn left and then I heard a crunch and a lot of shouting.

"A man on the pavement was shouting at the lorry driver and I saw the lorry go forwards and then backwards."

The LAS sent an ambulance, fast response vehicle and air ambulance to the scene.

The air ambulance had to land on the playing field at nearby Shene School.

Headteacher Lesley Kirby said: "It's a very serious accident.

"The air ambulance landed straight in our playing field.

"Quite a few of our pupils were around when it happened and the police said they behaved magnificently.

"They have all had to find alternative routes home either through Richmond Park or some other way because none of their usual buses are running."

The accident has closed the A205 Upper Richmond Road in both directions.

Traffic is queuing back between the A306 Roehampton Lane - B306 Queen's Ride and B351 Sheen Lane junctions and there is heavy congestion on the A205 westbound to the A219 Putney Hill and on the A316 to Chiswick Bridge.

Local diversions have been put in place.
