A lorry driver died after he crashed into a bridge on the A3 between Esher and Hook yesterday.
Roy Drawbridge, 71, from Leatherhead, ploughed his lorry into a bridge after veering off the carriageway.
The accident happened shortly before the start of the evening rush hour and there were massive tailbacks with traffic queuing in both directions.
Police diverted traffic through Tolworth and Hook after the dual carriageway was closed north and southbound. Drivers were advised to avoid the road.
The southbound carriageway did not open until 1am this morning.
Fire crews were quickly at the scene of the crash, which happened at 4.55pm. The air ambulance was also called.
A police spokesman said: "A flatbed lorry left the carriageway and collided with a bridge support. One man has died from the injuries he sustained."
Anyone with information should call the Collision Investigation Unit on 01932 564131.
