An elderly woman was left with a head injury after being hit by a car in Claremont Road, Surbiton on today.

An air ambulance, a ground ambulance and a fast response car from London Ambulance Service arrived on the scene just before midday.

Paramedics and a trauma-trained doctor treated the woman, before taking her to St George's Hospital, Tooting.

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called to Claremont Road at 11:46am to reports of a road traffic accident involving a car and pedestrian.

"We sent an ambulance and fast response car to the scene. In addition we sent a team from the air ambulance consisting of a trauma trained doctor and paramedic. The first vehicle arrived in approximately six minutes."

Claremont Road was closed outside Waitrose in both directions until 3pm. Witness Simon Harris said: "All buses were on diversion and it created a lot of confusion for travelling members of the public.

"Bus controllers and transport officials were on scene to assist passengers. In the mean time, buses and cars were diverted via Maple Road."
