The notorious subway at Tolworth Broadway will be replaced by a pelican crossing at the A240, thanks to a cash injection from Transport for London to spend on travel improvements in the borough.

A total of £4.8million has been awarded to Kingston Council for next year, which is the biggest year-on-year rise of any London borough.

The money will be spent on a variety of schemes including Bike Week and In town without my car' day.

A considerable amount will be spent on the redevelopment of Tolworth Broadway to create more pleasant public space and to increase safety and security by providing better street lighting and signage.

Other schemes include a £585,000 grant for improvements for cyclists and pedestrians across and £529,000 for school and work travel plans to encourage pupils and employees to walk or use public transport.

The Station Estate in New Malden is also in for a £300,000 to go towards safety improvement.

Councillor Simon James, executive member for transport at the council, said: "That we have been able to secure this level of funding is a tremendous outcome for the borough. This will allow us to continue to improve the highway network for the benefit our residents and for all of those that live, work and visit Kingston.

"It will also allow us to take another big step forward with our objective of promoting travel awareness and the use of sustainable forms of transport."
