WELLING player-manager Jamie Day was pleased with his side’s 2-0 derby win at Bromley on Non-League day and hopes it will give them a boost ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup tie against Bishop Stortford.

The Wings rarely looked troubled as they controlled the game in front of more than 1,300 fans at Hayes Lane with goals from Theo Fairweather-Johnson, his first for the club, and Lee Clarke either side of half-time enough to see off their rivals.

The away side looked far superior as they dominated possession with good vocal backing from the travelling Welling fans and Day admitted his team were deserved winners.

He said: “I felt there was only one team that was going to win it after we started so well.

“We knew we needed a good start and credit to the boys, they got on the front foot and dictated play and deservedly got the goal we needed before half-time.

“Theo has done really well when he has come on as a substitute and when he has started he has put in a good shift, so I was pleased for him today.

“We didn’t really feel threatened at any stage, we showed we can pass and play and any route one balls we dealt with.

“Defensively we were excellent.”

Day is now hoping his side can continue their level of performance into Saturday’s highly-anticipated FA Cup fourth qualifying round home tie with Bishop’s Stortford.

The last time the Wings progressed to the first round proper was seven years ago under former manager Adrian Pennock, now assistant manager at Stoke City, when they lost 4-1 at Huddersfield.

Day played for Welling that day and while clearly eagerly awaiting the prospect of a glamour tie, he is not getting ahead of himself and knows Saturday’s game against the Blues will be a difficult one.

But the player-manager believes if they produce the same level of performance as they did against Bromley, then they should progress.

“We will take this performance into next Saturday,” explained Day.

“It is going to be a tough game.

“Bishop Stortford manager Rod Stringer knows us well from his Braintree days, so it’s not going to be easy.

“Hopefully we can put in the same level of performance as we did today and that should see us through to the next round.”

Aside from the result, Day was delighted with the contribution of both sides, as well as the supporters, on Saturday in proving how good semi-professional football is on a day when non-league football was in the national limelight for once.

He added: “We want as many people through the gates to watch non-league football as possible and I think both teams showed the standard has risen in years and there are good quality players playing at this level now.

“The Welling following was fantastic.

“With them cheering us on it helps the boys get the right results.”
