Wimbledon Park welcomes new beach volleyball courts

First published in by

Two hundred tonnes of sand from the London 2012 beach volleyball courts were used for the first time at their new home in Wimbledon Park last weekend.

Wimbledon Park was one of six venues across the UK selected to receive Olympic legacy sand, as well as nets, after a successful bid by Merton Council to the 2012 Beach Volleyball Capital Investment Initiative.

The project is funded by Sport England as part of Volleyball England’s Go Spike campaign, aimed at increasing participation in volleyball by creating more facilities.

Lisa Wainwright, chief executive of Volleyball England, said: “We are hoping the excitement around the London 2012 Games will inspire more people to try out sports such as beach volleyball.

“This project will help to create a legacy for volleyball and encourage people to adopt healthier, more active lifestyles.”
