A late-night police chase ended with a man on a moped suffering bad leg injuries.
Residents said they were woken up to the sound of sirens as a herd of police cars chased a man on a scooter, who then crashed in front of Mitcham fire station in London Road.
The crash happened at about 12.30am yesterday, after a chase involving a police helicopter, several marked cars and a police van.
The Metropolitan Police were unable to comment this morning on why they were in pursuit of the 25-year-old man and whether he had been arrested for an offence.
One witness, who did not want to be named, said: “The bike and the boy were sprawled all over the road. The way it looked, I wouldn’t have been surprised to see flowers there.
“I literally had a front road seat, I was plodding home from late night shopping and I was surprised at how many police were chasing him.”
Another resident, Serena Lacey, added: “The helicopter was over Morden Park and cars kept zooming past for about 45 minutes with their sirens going.”
A London Ambulance spokeswoman confirmed a 25-year-old man was treated for leg and ankle injuries before he was taken as a priority to St George’s Hospital.
