The Olympic torch finally arrives in Merton next week after its 8,000-mile journey across the UK and Ireland.
Andy Murray, Sue Barker and Lisa Snowdon will be among the more famous of the 30 torch bearers taking part in the parade on Monday, July 23, but organisers did not manage to find a single Merton resident to feature in the showpiece publicity stunt.
From about 3.20pm, the torch will be passed from Sutton to Mitcham via Bishopsford Road, where TV presenter and tennis champion Sue Barker will carry the flame into the Tooting and Mitcham Community Sports Club.
The flame will then be taken along Western Road towards Merantun Way in Colliers Wood, then to Wimbledon Park via Haydons Road.
British tennis star Andy Murray will then carry the torch on to Centre Court at the All England Club, which will host the Olympic tennis event, the first time he will have visited Wimbledon since his defeat to Roger Federer in this year’s Wimbledon final.
As the torch passes through the different areas of Merton, there will be outdoor picnic parties taking place at Mitcham Fair Green, Merton Abbey Mills, South Park Gardens, Wimbledon, and Ricards Lodge School, also in Wimbledon.
