A Merton councillor has flown to Africa to volunteer and share experiences in local Government.

Krystal Miller, Conservative councillor for Trinity ward in Wimbledon, joined 80 volunteers on Project Umubano – a Conservative party social action initiative in Rwanda.

The project aims is to help charities who support survivors of the 1994 genocide understand how they can help with the local decision process.

Coun Miller also met with the mayor of Rulindo district in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, to share her experiences in local government with him.

She said: “They have some very difficult challenges such as getting clean water. However some of the problems are the same. He needs to build more classrooms.

“The Rwandan people have been incredibly welcoming and their stories very moving.

“I hope that in passing on some of our expertise, it will allow our work to have a lasting benefit after we return home.”
