A navy commander has followed in the footsteps of Winston Churchill and Admiral Lord Nelson by receiving a prestigious honour.
Commander Tom Sharpe, commanding officer of Royal Navy warship HMS St Albans, was awarded the Freedom of the City of London, the City’s highest available honour.
The father-of-three, who lives in Wimbledon with his wife and son, said: “I feel incredibly privileged. I am also very grateful to be awarded Freeman of the Haberdasher for recognition of our close liaison over the past two years.”
Appointed OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in June 2010, he assumed command of HMS St Albans – the 16th and last of the Royal Navy’s Type 23 frigate warships – in September 2010 and will step down later this month.
