Residents have urged police take swifter action after they were advised to hide at home or "behind a large fence" from a dangerous dog.

Merton police launched an appeal for information about an incident in which an elderly man was taken to hospital after trying to stop the dog from mauling his dog, Millie, in Kirkley Road, south Wimbledon.

On the same day, April 10, the same dog, who residents believe was a Staffordshire bull terrier, is believed to have killed a Siamese cat in nearby Melbourne Road.

Posters have been displayed in Kirkley Road criticising police for being too slow to act and urging residents to contact the Wimbledon Guardian and Merton Council.

The poster says: "[The police] appear powerless to take any action regarding this dog – until it attacks a child."

It adds: "We will have a much better chance of removing this dangerous dog from our community if everyone registers their concern."

Police have described the dog as being dark brown, brindle, black haired, of reasonable size and powerful build, with possibly some white marking around the mouth area.

PC Peter Beesley, of Abbey safer neighbourhood team, said: “Be vigilant that this has happened and remember personal safety.

“It is important to stress that this dog has not specifically attacked a person, (injuries inflicted on the owner were on trying to separate the dogs).

“Personal safety may involve isolating yourself from the dog such as inside a house, vehicle or behind a high enough fence.”
