Proposals to make film diaries of the Olympics have been dismissed as “something you can do on YouTube”.

Merton Council’s Conservative group has called for funds to create an "Olympic legacy" suggesting some of the money could be used to make "a series of film diaries of the celebrations led by young people".

Conservative councillors argued the council, which they say has under spent by £14m this year, should spend more on Olympic celebrations above the £10,000 capital expenditure already allocated and additional government grants.

Councillor Samantha George, who represents Village ward, said: "I am disappointed that Merton Council didn’t agree to spend a small part of the £14m stashed away by Labour this year to mark an event that’s only taken place in London twice before in the last 104 years.

“As a host borough for one of the Olympic events, both current and future Merton residents deserve better.

“Hard pressed council officers are doing an excellent job but, as the games approach, they are being asked to do more and more with very little."

Councillor Martin Whelton, cabinet member for community and culture, said Merton is spending enough on Olympic celebrations and new sporting facilities.

A BMX track and multi-use games area due to open in Mitcham and a temporary beach volleyball court will be built in Wimbledon Park.

He said: "We are putting on a lot of events on and around the Olympics and working with partners in the community.

“What they were suggesting is the sort of thing you could do on You Tube. The motion didn’t make much sense."

He also denied the council had stashed away £14m, but said it did have £11.5m in reserves which he said should be used to budget for "risks and address budget gaps in the future."
