A motorist has died this morning after a serious crash with a lorry in Mitcham.

The driver of a silver Peugeot 206, a 35-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene after crashing into a white refrigerated lorry at about 8.10am.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police's road death investigation unit have begun an investigation and inquiries are underway to inform the man's next of kin.

A police spokeswoman said the lorry driver stopped at the scene and no arrests have been made.

London Road was closed in both directions after a car crashed in London Road, near the junction with Morden Road and Tramway path (next to Mitcham tram station).

A witness at the scene said he saw the man being airlifted to hospital by a helicopter which landed in Imperial Fields, the ground owned by Tooting and Mitcham United Football Club.

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called at 8.10am to reports of a road traffic collision involving a car and a lorry.

“We sent three ambulance crews, a duty manager and London’s Air Ambulance.

“Sadly, a man, believed to be in his 30s, was pronounced dead by the air ambulance doctor at the scene.”

London Road was closed for the rest of the morning between Imperial Fields and the railway bridge.
