Wimbledon Common has changed a lot in the past century and now there is a book to prove it.

'Wimbledon Common: 100 Years of Change' provides an illustrated account of how time has shaped the space – from the arrival of the bypass to playing fields.

Derek Frampton, commons conservator and one of the book’s five authors, said the publication commemorated a century since Walter Johnson’s work, Wimbledon Common; Its Geology, Antiquities and Natural History.

He said: “Walter Johnson’s book of 1912 represents in many ways a world we have lost, but much has been retained and some of it would even be recognisable to Johnson today.”

The book is available at £5.99 and Wimbledon Guardian readers can get postage and packaging free.
