Mitcham town centre suffered traffic chaos this morning after a scooter was involved in a crash on the one-way-system.

Two men have been seriously injured: a pedestrian in his 50s who was taken to St George's Hospital and the driver in his 20s who was taken to St Helier Hospital.

London Road was shut after the incident at just before 9am on Lower Green West, towards Colliers Wood and Tooting. The road reopened at about 12.30pm.

An eyewitness from nearby Mitcham fire station said a police cordon has been set up and a security vehicle was also involved in the accident.

Another eyewitness, who works in the town centre, said it looked like a boy or young man was involved and looked to be in a very serious condition.

He said: "The police have put down yellow markers in the road and there were lots of emergency services. The road was still shut after two hours and I'm afraid it doesn't look good."
