A fire has damaged more than half of a house's roof and first floor.

Crews from Wimbledon, New Malden, Mitcham and Wandsworth - 20 firefighters in total - were called to the semi-detached house in Spencer Hill Road, Wimbledon, at 7.51am.

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said the fire had damaged over half the first floor and had destroyed half of the roof.

Station Manager, Lisa Hicks, said: “There was a lot of fire and smoke damage to the first floor of the property.

"An older man left the building, uninjured before firefighters arrived.

"Our fire investigation team is investigating how the fire started.”

An eyewitness at the scene said: "Apparently no one was hurt and the man that lives there had got out well before the fire engines turned up.

"A fireman told me they saved the roof, which they were pretty pleased about, but there was such much debris on the front drive which was still smouldering."
