One Wimbledon fan has spoken about his pride and relief after he was filmed breaking down in tears moments after the club secured their place in the football league.

Jack Field was one of the thousands of Dons fans sitting nervously behind the goal as Wimbledon captain Danny Kedwell placed the ball on the penalty spot.

As the ball hit the net, and Wimbledon had secured their place in football’s elite once again, the 23-year-old from Wandsworth Common, burst into tears.

He said: “I suppose it was a massive emotional outpouring. It was a relief. On top of that just a great sense of achievement. It seems like the achievements over just a few years have outweighed the disappointments.”

He said the result meant he and other fans could concentrate on their remarkable rise through the leagues, rather than dwell on how the club was destroyed by a decision to relocate the club north to Milton Keynes and rename it MK Dons.

Mr Field said: “It shows how far we have come as a club in the community. We feel so proud rather than the bitterness we feel.

“It was a great, great, moment. We were delirious.”
