Stephen Hammond comfortably held Wimbledon for the Conservatives last night despite a strong showing by the Lib Dems.

Mr Hammond, who is likely to be the minister for transport if the Tories form the next government, increased his majority by around 6,000.

The surprise of the night was the strength of the Lib Dem vote which saw Shas Sheehan gain 11,849 votes beating the ex Merton Labour council leader, Andrew Judge, into third place.

The Lib Dem votes went up by about 4,000 compared to 2005 - while Labour lost about 5,000.
