In a landslide victory, Siobhain McDonagh took the seat with a 13,550 vote majority over her nearest rival – up 1,000 from the 2005 election.

The Conservative candidate, Melanie Hampton, polled 11,056 votes while the Liberal Democrat’s Diana Coman finished third on 5,202 votes.

Ms McDonagh said: "This is an extremely humbling occasion. It's the greatest honour I can imagine, to represent my home constituency as a Member of Parliament."

She added: "My heartfelt thanks to all the voters in Mitcham and Morden and I guarantee I will do my very best over the next four years."
