In a bid to reduce waste which isn’t recycled, Merton Council wants to work with a company to dispose of computers.
At the moment, the council bins IT assets when they stop working.
It has now put out a tender call for a recycling service to come on board.
Contract details on londontenders.org said the council hopes to reduce how much it sends to landfill.
“In some instances, devices will still provide some operational level of use, however a large proportion of equipment disposed of will be non–operational and in some circumstances, incomplete units,” it said.
“A key objective is to send as little waste as possible to landfill and to treat or dispose of all electrical and electronic waste responsibly in compliance with Environmental Agency regulations, ethically and to minimise the council’s carbon footprint.”
Merton wants to outsource the contract for three years starting this August with the tender call closing next week.
A council spokeswoman clarified that IT assets are disposed of in the correct manner, adding: “Merton Council currently uses the services of a responsible IT asset disposal company.
"As the contract is coming to end we are inviting quotes from providers via the London Tenders Portal.”
