The owner of a restaurant crowned the best takeaway in Britain says business owners and residents are being let down by Merton Council over an overflowing bin and fly-tipping site.

Tanser Ozdemir, who runs Ambience in Leopold Road, Wimbledon, says the council has failed to address a problem bin covered in unsightly stickers and a magnet for fly-tipped rubbish bags outside his restaurant.

Mr Ozdemir says he has been appealing to the council for help without success for years and wants the bin moved. A letter to the council, dated April 8, 2013, describes how there were so many rubbish bags dumped next to the bin that pedestrians had trouble passing by.

More than three years later, the situation has not improved, according to Mr Ozdemir, whose business was named best takeway in Britain by website Hungryhouse earlier this year. He said: “If you go there now there are about 10 stacks of rubbish around it. We end up taking the rubbish and throwing it away in our own bins every morning.”

Neighbouring business owners echoed Mr Ozdemir’s concerns. Richard Halliday, owner of Halliday’s Homes and Hardware, attributed the problem to the council’s street cleaning teams, who he claimed are not thorough enough.

He said: “I would actually supply them with a broom if I knew they were going to use it.”

Cabinet member for street cleanliness and parking, Councillor Ross Garrod, said: “On Leopold Road we regularly talk to residents and businesses about the importance of litter bins being used for street litter and not household waste as well as checking dumped bags, issuing fines as a result. Our zero tolerance to fly tipping means if we catch people dumping rubbish where they shouldn’t, we will issue up to £400 fine.”
