Police are investigating after two suspected arson attacks just an hour apart in New Malden last night.

Rubbish was set on fire at a garage to the rear of Poundland in the High Street at 10.07pm.

Two fire engines were called to extinguish the flames, which were high enough to reach above the shop and blacken the windows of the property above.

Then, at 11.10pm, the emergency services were called to a garden shed on fire in Woodfield Gardens.

Three fire engines tackled the blaze as it spread to hedges and a fence in the garden, with smoke visible to drivers on the A3.

The details of both fires have been passed onto the police.
