The 5,000 signatures on the Wimbledon Guardian’s petition to ‘Save our town centre’ from Crossrail 2 will be handed in to City Hall today (Thursday).
So far 4,959 people have signed the petition, which calls to save Wimbledon from the severe disruption and traffic chaos due to be caused by the intense construction in the town centre to make way for 30 Crossrail 2 trains an hour and an extra 3,000 commuters.
Sites facing demolition include Wimbledon Bridge House, 60 per cent of Centre Court Shopping Centre, the Queens Court Care Home, the Prince of Wales pub and the Everyday Church.
Dundonald Road, Gap Road and Weir Road are also earmarked for intense building work.

The petition will be handed to London Assembly member Kemi Badenoch by the Wimbledon Guardian team, news editor Becky Middleton and reporter Pippa Allen-Kinross, as well as representatives from residents’ group Friends of Wimbledon Town Centre and local councillors on Thursday, March 17.
