A prisoner charged with murdering a fellow inmate at Wandsworth prison while awaiting trial for an assault in Wimbledon Common appeared at the Old Bailey on Friday via video link.

Taras Nykolyn, 46, of Meredith Street, Plaistow, was arrested on June 19, 2014, after an early morning assault near the Windmill Cafe on Wimbledon Common.

He was charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent after a man reported to be on his 50s, Roger Maxwell, was taken to hospital with a facial injury.

Mr Nykolyn was remanded in custody and denied the charge at Kingston Crown Court on October 31 last year.

He was charged with the murder of fellow Wandsworth prison inmate Wadid Barsoum on May 5 this year, after police were called to the prison shortly after 7.30am on May 4.

Mr Barsoum died in hospital later that morning.

Mr Nykolyn, who wore a dark shirt and dark jogging bottoms as he appeared via video link from Belmarsh prison on Friday afternoon.

The trial is due to begin on January 11, 2016. Mr Nykolyn will appear again via video at the Old Bailey on Wednesday, December 16.
