A 14 year old boy arrested on suspicion of arson has been bailed until January following a fire at the Baitul Futuh in Morden on Saturday.

Two teenage boys were arrested the day after the huge fire on London Road. A 16 year old has been released with no further action.

SATURDAY: Huge fire at Morden mosque

The building was evacuated quickly as 70 firefighters tackled the blaze but one man needed treatment for smoke inhalation at hospital.

The mosque's administration building was reported to have been badly damaged but the worship hall and iconic "love for all, hatred for none" sign survived the fire.

The mosque is used by members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and recently hosted the largest convention for Muslims in the UK.

Leading members of the Ahmadiyya community are awaiting news from the fire service about when it will be safe to re-enter the building.

Spokesman for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Worldwide, Farooq Aftab, said they were hoping that they would be able to hold a service on Friday.

He said: “It’s still under control of the emergency services for now. Hopefully they’ll let us in today.

“It’s a bit of a shock, a bit of a concern, but incredibly nothing happened to the mosque.

“We’re grateful to the emergency services and hoping they get to the bottom of this soon.”

Police officers have been holding community meetings to "provide reassurance" following the fire, which broke out at about 12.15pm.

London Fire Brigade sent 10 engines to the blaze.
