The gardens of a historic mansion on Wimbledon Common will not be used for live music and late night boozing after councillors threw out a licence alteration bid.

Neighbours of Cannizaro House hit out at plans by owners to hold late night events with a bar in marquees at the front and back of the hotel, serve alcohol until 2am some nights and put on live music.

From Tuesday: Outrage over plans for late night events at Cannizaro House Hotel on Wimbledon Common

A total of 35 complaints were received, and a number of neighbours went to the licensing sub-committee meeting on Wednesday evening to voice concerns.

Merton Council said it agreed with residents’ concerns about late night noise levels in a residential area and rejected the application to vary the licence for the hotel, run by Hotel du Vin.

West Side Common resident Struan Robertson said: “We know that we won a battle, however we know Hotel du Vin will be back with another application and we will be watching carefully to see if they have changed their attitude.”

Residents said they are hopeful that Hotel du Vin has understood its obligations to prevent public nuisance and be considerate neighbours.

A council spokeswoman said: “We listened to and agreed with residents’ concerns about noise levels late at night in such a residential area.

"Given the scale of the proposals, we also agreed that the hotel group should submit a full licensing application which the committee will determine in due course.”

Phil Lewis, general manager for Hotel du Vin Wimbledon, said: "Hotel du Vin respects the decision of the council and will continue to work hard to build relationships with the local residents.

"Since we took over the hotel, aside from decorative refurbishments, we’ve put in place a range of measures to mitigate any potential disturbances at night, not least of which is doubling the night management team so that guests leave the hotel with the minimum of noise.

"As a group we operate hotels in a range of locations, many of which are within residential areas, and we do so with the utmost professionalism and support of the local community.

"On June 11th we will open our doors officially as Hotel du Vin Wimbledon, and we very much look forward to showcasing the newly refurbished hotel to our regulars and newcomers alike."
