A bank was robbed in Mitcham this morning - the second time in two months - making it the fourth unsolved bank robbery in Merton since December.

Police have taped off HSBC in London Road after a man who appeared to be acting alone reportedly demanded money from cashiers after they opened the shop at about 9.20am.

Chris Stophi, a manager at Toulla's hair salon next door to the bank, said he spoke to a "shocked" cashier after the robbery who told him someone had been looking into the branch before it opened.

"She said there was somebody outside for some time. I didn't see anybody, I was with a customer. As they opened up they must have gone in and asked for money."

The same branch was robbed on Tuesday, December 23, on the same day as robbers got away with cash from a Barclays branch in Coombe Lane, Raynes Park.

Police reported earlier this month that no arrests had been made in connection to either robbery.

Nationwide in Mitcham was also robbed on Friday, January 16, after a man entered the store claiming to be carrying a bomb.

Police confirmed the robbery, saying: "it is understood the suspects stole a quantity of cash".
