Police have confirmed that a man found dead on a Wimbledon pavement in the early hours of January 31 was Mitchell Hewett.

He was found by police with multiple injuries at the base of a block of flats in Durnsford Road, Wimbledon, where he lived.

His death had been unexplained but police said today they were not treating it as suspicious, pending toxicology reports.

From last Monday: Man found dead on pavement died of multiple injuries

Up to 300 of 32-year-old Mr Hewett’s friends and family, including his father Mike, paid tribute to him on a Facebook group set up in his memory.

Mr Hewett went to the Licensed Victuallers' boarding school in Slough and it is not known how long he had lived in Wimbledon.

His friends have set up a MitchFest event after his funeral at the end of this month to honour him.

Dozens of photographs and memories were posted on the Facebook group at the beginning of the month.

Many of them feature pictures of unicorns and nights out with friends with Mr Hewett, who is from the Ascot area, smiling to the camera.

One post on the In Loving Memory of Mitchell Hewett group said: "Aw Mitch...you will always have a special place in my heart.

"The stars are shining brighter now that they have got you."

Another said: "Descansa en paz amigo. As anyone who was lucky to know u, even for a little while, we will always remember your smile and your amazing heart."

Merton police had been called to Durnsford Road, at the junction with Plough Lane, at 4.30am on Saturday, January 31 following reports of a man lying on the pavement.

He was pronounced dead a short time later and formally identified on Friday.
