Remembrance services will be held across Merton on Sunday to mark the centenary of the First World War and all those who have died in conflict.

The day will commence with a 9am ceremony at St Mary's War Memorial, Merton Park, attended by members of the Royal British Legion's Morden branch.

Services will take be held at Mitcham and Wimbledon War Memorials at 10.40am.

Following the Mitcham ceremony, Deputy Lieutenant, The Right Honorable Sir John Wheeler, Mayor of Merton, Councillor Agatha Akyigyina and the chairman of the Royal British Legion Mitcham branch will take the salute.

The Wimbledon service will end with a salute by the Deputy Mayor of Merton, Councillor Laxmi Attawar, chairman of the Royal British Legion Wimbledon branch and Major Alex Hamilton.

Members of the 210 Transport Squadron will also attend the service.

In Morden, a remembrance service will commence at St Lawrence's Church at 10.30am, attended by members of the Royal British Legion Morden branch. The service will be followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial by the church Lychgate, with cadets from Morden 43F Air Training Corps.

Blood red poppy symbols have already been attached to lampposts around the borough to mark the start of a special season of remembrance events marking 100 years since the start of the First World War.

More than 300 paper poppies were made by Juniors and Anchors from the Fifth Kingston and Merton Boys Brigade last week to decorate a banner for the New Malden United Reformed Church.

Members will march down New Malden High Street on Sunday as part of the parade to lay a wreath at the New Malden War Memorial.

Wimbledon MP Stephen Hammond joined Merton Conservatives leader, Councillor Oonagh Moulton selling poppies at Wimbledon Station on London Poppy Day on Thursday.

On Armistice Day next Tuesday, there will be services to observe a nationwide two minute silence at the Merton Civic Centre in Morden and the Clock Tower in Fair Green, Mitcham.

These will start at 10.50am.

Councillor Stephen Alambritis, leader of Merton Council, said: “Merton’s Services of Remembrance are there for all of us to remember all those who have given their lives for the peace and freedom we have today.

"On these days residents across Merton reflect on the sacrifices made by our brave Service men and women”
