A 27-year-old man is in a critical condition in hospital after a stabbing near Mitcham Common this morning.

London Ambulance Service were called to Cedars Avenue just after 2am this morning and found a man suffering from head wounds.

He was taken to a south London hospital as a priority.

No arrests have been made.

Police and forensics have blocked off the whole of Cedars Avenue, between Tamworth Lane and Commonside East, while they investigate.

Number 26 Cedars Avenue has been closed off with police tape but officers could not confirm if this was where the man was found.

A police officer is also standing guard outside Layton Court, close to the junction with St George's Road.

Nikoletta Hollo Szabr, 22, who lives opposite the junction with Cedars Avenue in Tamworth Lane, said: "After this I don't think it's safe here.

"A few weeks ago I was coming home at around 1am and a man came around the corner carrying his shoes and he was covered in blood."

Darryl Howard, 26, of Cedars Avenue, said he did not hear anything last night and it was a "shock" to wake up to a crime scene this morning.

He said: "I've lived round here for four or five years and nothing like this has happened."

Police have taped off Cedars Avenue, between Tamworth Lane and Commonside East

Police said they expect the road to remain closed for the next couple of hours.

Sean Ince, who lives close to the crime scene said he was surprised by the incident.

He added: "Recently, you get lots of kids hanging out by Avantine Avenue being noisy which we never had before."
