Firefighters are preparing to trek 100km from London to Brighton in aid of Blind Veterans UK.
Cath Homan, watch manager at Wimbledon Fire Station, will be setting off on the mammoth walk with four firemen on Saturday, June 21, after seeing the walk advertised.
She said: "At the time my dad who did his national service in the late 1940's and has limited vision was awaiting an eye operation, and my concern was that if it didn't go to plan he would be blind.
"I spoke to Blind Veterans and was overwhelmed by what the charity does, quite amazing. Any personnel who have served with the forces and succumb to partially and total blindness are eligible.
"This struck a chord for me and I decided to sign up - walking 100km was the lease I could do."
Miss Homan will be joined by Nairn McIntosh, Graham Dicks, David Gavin and Andy Fullalove for the two-day walk.
So far they have raised just over £600 of their £2,000 fundraising target.
